There’s a pair of shadows found in this town

One cast from your family one cast to the ground

Sweeps down from that mountain that looms over all 

As a child I stared up, a dreamer in awe

High midnight skies as I creep from my tent, alone, darkness sand dune    

Sand crabs scurry to the ocean rhythm no light from the hiding moon     

The arc of the Milky Way clear as a cloudless day, provides me its guiding                   

Like old friends into a hometown bar all the stars come out of hiding

I was a party of one using the sun dragging a towel to the beach

Looking for a tan napping in the sand out of anyone’s reach

The families take the shore space, the loners take the hiding place

It happened once again the third day was a trend there’s a girl sharing the heat

Summer is a sunbeam It becomes a routine no space for the might have been

I’m my grandparents’ boarder they keep me in order I have no time for sin

I’m a local I’m a tourist, my thoughts are the purest I’ll be home when school begins

Day ten and I see her but I’m getting no nearer I pretend I’m looking for my friend

We Never Say Goodbye

My first memory is all about me 

I was scared out of my wits

Some news on TV about how soon 

We’d all be blown to bits

In a life just begun I was overcome

Awareness of my mortality 

I needed answers and not just to be 

Reassured compassionately

One dimensional dad was the image I had

Stoic and stern but a straight shooter

I ran to him dazed and afraid

Burst out tears and fears to sooth over

One Dimensional dad shifted logically

Said nobody wants everybody to die

Don’t fear what may never appear

I cried  I wanted a world without goodbye

He said its ok to say you’re scared

It’s ok to say it makes you cry

In school I survived sometimes thrived

I graduated and lit out on my own

Parents got me luggage and a razor 

I left the only home I’d ever known

I found a note buried in my tote

It said “This is it, you’re gonna make us proud”

Watch you fly high we’ll stand by

We will help but will never crowd

They said see you later, call when you can

Make choices you can justify

But we never say no we never say

They were the guide for my ride

Both there til my mother died

From those lashes dad crawled from the ashes

Reinvented and then revived

Same to the core but so much more

One-Dimensional dad was fully formed

This new life he attacked in his second act 

Was the final role model he performed

I’m by his right hand on this final stand

In a ER strangers sadly shake their head

Machines for sound we gather around

Only signal is a tear that he shed

Shadow At My Heels

Wake up girl we’re dying  and we ain’t even up to the fight

Stuck in our crib since birth under the watchful eye of night

When I get up in the morning  there’s direction I want to know

Is love the answer in this world to where you want to go

Or do we just take, take, take, and take and burn the life away

Is a faithful heart alone at night just wasting time away

And does a man get closer to hell with every dollar he steals

And are we all just running from the shadow falling at our heels

Our dead eyed pursuit, daily commute, and Mondays never ending

Chasing a goal is like digging a hole with our sights unbending

Discipline or obsession, how do you tell between the two

Where’s it drawn between good and wrong, of all the things we do

We roll the dice we pay the price but what of those left in our wake

Must we answer for all affected by every choice we make

And does a man get closer to hell with every dollar he steals

And are we all just running from the shadow falling at our heels

I walk out into a morning on the other side of an endless cameo 

There’s wild flowers on the side of the road but the trees don’t let ‘em grow

Our lives have gone from lunar landings to virtual reality

Careening faster towards some disaster is it our cosmic destiny

Can we do better to make the days matter instead of counting ‘em down

Did the meaning of life reveal itself while I was busy working out of town

Shadow fears anger of the years is that the sole mission we share

Others destroy and rewrite while hand in hand we make it there

Some answers would be nice

But for now this moment will suffice

Once we reach our happy Eden and find we must keep moving on

You can try your best but the shadows don’t rest

They just keep on creeping on and on
